During the recent Association of Mine Managers (AMMZ) AGM and Conference, Unki Mines General Manager, Engineer Walter Nemasasi delivered an insightful presentation on the emerging world trends impacting the decision process of future mine managers. He emphasised the evolving role of mine managers in response to a changing world, including technological advancements, economic conditions, political stability, and the influence of civic organisations and NGOs.
Nemasasi highlighted the growing importance of responsible mining practices, as organisations like the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA) set standards for environmental and social impacts in the industry. He also emphasised the role of technology, such as automation and digitalisation, in achieving continuous operational efficiency and safety.
Another key trend addressed in the presentation was the increasing focus on zero environmental damage and zero injuries. Nemasasi discussed the adoption of sustainable and environmentally friendly practices, such as clean power and safety systems like proximity detection and real-time monitoring. Contrary to popular belief Zimbabwe has some of the world’s top tier mechanised mines operating in line with Nemasasi’s presentation such as Unki Mines, Zim Plats,Mimosa Mines, Freda Rebecca, Trojan Nickel, Blanket Mine, ZCDC, Eureka Gold just to name a few.
The presentation further delved into how the technological landscape is reshaping the industry, with machines and equipment becoming autonomous and efficient, powered by artificial intelligence. These advancements have improved efficiency and safety by keeping workers away from potential hazards.
The presentation by Nemasasi ultimately emphasised the need for mine managers in Zimbabwe to stay ahead of emerging trends and prioritise responsible mining practices. By leveraging technological advancements and adapting to changing environments, mine managers in Zimbabwe can ensure the viability of their mines and contribute to a greener, more sustainable world.
