THE Scientific and Industrial Research and Development Centre (SIRDC), in partnership with the Korea Partnership for Innovation of Agriculture (KOPIA), has hosted an international conference on innovation and sustainability in promoting insect-based livestock feed at the Harare International Conference Centre (HICC).
The conference brought together researchers, policymakers, farmers, industry experts and entrepreneurs to explore the potential of insects as a sustainable alternative source of protein for livestock feed.
Opening the conference, SIRDC Chief Executive Officer, Dr Leonard Madzingaidzo said the initiative supports economic growth and sustainable development.
“The programme is aligned with Zimbabwe’s National Vision 2030, as set by His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, Dr Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, which seeks to transform the country into a prosperous and empowered upper middle-income society by 2030.”
Dr Madzingaidzo said insect farming presents opportunities to improve agricultural productivity by converting organic waste into livestock feed and fertiliser products.
South Korea Ambassador to Zimbabwe, His Excellency Mr Jae Kyung Park said the conference demonstrates the importance of international collaboration in advancing agricultural innovation and knowledge sharing.
The conference also provided a platform for stakeholders to exchange research findings, explore business opportunities and discuss policies to support the growth of insect farming in Zimbabwe and beyond.
