Wheelchair and food hamper donation brings relief to families in Murewa

GOVERNMENT, in partnership with development stakeholders, has intensified support for persons with disabilities in Murewa North Constituency, with the distribution of 75 wheelchairs and 120 food hampers aimed at improving livelihoods and promoting inclusion.
The initiative was spearheaded by the constituency’s legislator, Honourable Daniel Garwe.
Parents and guardians of children living with disabilities welcomed the donation, saying it would significantly improve mobility and ease daily challenges.
“We are grateful for this donation as it has brought relief to our families. My child had no proper wheelchair, and the one we were using was in a sorry state.”
The Muslim community, which partnered in the programme, said the food hampers were meant to complement government efforts to support vulnerable groups.
“Today, honourable Garwe donated wheelchairs to persons with disabilities. As a representative of the Muslims for Development and Empowerment, we have also given 120 food hampers to complement efforts by the government to support persons with disabilities,” Muslim Community representative, Hazrat Jafar Omar Mwachande said.
Head of Murewa Social Welfare, Mrs Kerinah Mutende said the intervention aligns with provisions of the Disability Act and the National Disability Policy of 2021, which promote equal rights and opportunities for persons with disabilities.
“The national disability policy of 2021 states that persons with disabilities have the same rights as people without disabilities.”
Honourable Garwe, who is also the Minister of Local Government and Public Works, said government remains committed to advancing the inclusive development agenda through empowerment programmes and improved access to essential services.
“We want to continue assisting people with disabilities, and we will continue mobilising resources to support them. We want to support them in terms of empowerment programmes and ensure they have access to basic human rights services such as education.”
The initiative reflects growing collaboration between government and faith-based organisations in addressing the needs of vulnerable groups while advancing inclusive development across communities.
