ZRP intensifies fight against gang-related crimes in Gwanda

POLICE in Gwanda have intensified efforts to combat gang-related crime in the mining town’s Spitzkop suburb, where authorities are battling a rise in violent offences, unlawful entry and muggings.

The suburb’s Red Cross area, which is home to a large number of artisanal miners, has emerged as a crime hotspot, prompting increased police intervention and community engagement initiatives.

Law enforcement agencies say gang-related violence and property crimes have become a growing concern, threatening the safety and security of residents.

“Cases that are prevalent in the area involve unlawful entry and mugging, and we as the police are there to help. We need to work together to end the menace,” Gwanda Urban Officer in Charge, Chief Inspector Bukhosi Maphosa said.

Stakeholders who attended the ZRP Gwanda Urban 2026 Client Service Charter launch this Friday believe unity between the community and the police is critical in the fight.

“We are encouraged as residents to work with the police even before the crime happens, so let us help them so that we fight the problem,” Business Community Against Crime member, Mr Akim Mpofu said.

“As Gwanda, let us not cover up cases, especially violence, because the ZRP needs to be told by us. We should report cases on time,” Gwanda Municipality Mayor, Councillor Thulani Moyo said.

As part of efforts to fight gang-related crimes, the Zimbabwe Republic Police has established bases at Redcross and Phakama.
