A Harare-based solar company director has appeared in court facing charges of fraud after allegedly duping another firm of solar batteries worth more than $24 000.

Panashe Kajama (28) appeared at the Harare Magistrates Court this Friday, jointly charged with his company on allegations of defrauding a local firm of US$24 360 in a botched solar equipment deal.

The State alleges that on May 13, Kajama contacted solar equipment supplier Sinociber Group Private Limited and ordered more than 60 batteries valued at US$31 360.

Court papers state that Kajama allegedly misrepresented to Sinociber Group Private Limited that he had cash on hand and would pay the full purchase price upon delivery.

Acting on the information, Sinociber delivered the batteries to Kajama, who allegedly paid only US$7 000

Kajama is said to have made repeated promises to pay the outstanding US$24 360, but he allegedly became evasive.

The accused is expected to return to court on July 13.
