Govt’s waste management initiative set to transform Beitbridge’s environmental outlook

THE government’s integrated approach to sustainable waste management is beginning to show tangible results, with the Beitbridge Town Municipality leading the way through the construction of a modern waste management plant.

The project, supported by the government and various development partners, is expected to improve environmental sustainability while stimulating local economic growth through recycling and waste-to-energy initiatives.

Officials say once completed, the facility will enable more efficient waste collection, sorting, and recycling, a key development in promoting cleaner cities and supporting Zimbabwe’s green economy agenda.

“The coming of these machines and the current construction of this place will help us in doing our bailing on time,” a council employee said.

Another municipal worker expressed optimism about the financial benefits for local workers and recyclers noting: “Now we are going to work a bit hard because these machines will help us have a big tonnage, thereby meaning more money for us.”

“Our job is going to be more hygienic as we try to get money for ourselves so that we feed our families,” a waste recycler and seller said.

Fixed with bailer machines and metal crushers, the project is set to promote formal recycling, gender inclusivity and local economic development.

“What we have here is a dedicated waste management activity, in particular recycling. As the local Authority generates a lot of waste, we came up with a plan to establish a recycling Plant where we can collect some waste and make value out of it. This will also help our Town to be clean and at the same time empower our local communities in a safe and hygienic environment,” project focal person, Ms Oratile Makwaiba said.

The Beitbridge Municipality’s drive aligns with the government’s broader environmental management goals, which aim to reduce pollution, create green jobs, and promote sustainable urban development across Zimbabwe.
