Landmark Bill to repeal ZDERA introduced by the US House

Story by Oleen Ndori, Foreign Editor

IN a landmark development, the United States House of Representatives has introduced a new bill meant to remove the illegal sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe in 2001.

Section 303 of the bill repeals the Zimbabwe Democracy and Economic Recovery Act of 2001 (ZDERA Act), as amended, Public Law 107–99 (115 Statute 962).

It further places conditions for continued cooperation between the US and Zimbabwe that include the settlement of outstanding debts under the Global Compensation Deed within 12 months.

ZDERA, enacted in 2001, imposed illegal sanctions on Zimbabwe, particularly regarding access to international financial institutions like the IMF and World Bank.
