Zimbabwe wins one of two rugby matches at 2023 African Games

Story by Lawrence Trusida, Sports Editor

THE Zimbabwe Sevens side, the Cheetahs experienced mixed fortunes on the first day of rugby competitions after winning one of the two matches they played at the ongoing African Games in Accra this Tuesday.

Zimbabwe made its rugby debut at the African Games with a 14-nil defeat to pre-tournament favourites Uganda.

However, the Cheetahs dusted themselves up from the defeat by bouncing back in the second match to defeat fancied Kenya 27 – 22 after sudden death.

The match had ended 22-all in regulation time but head coach Ricky Chirengende believes it shouldn’t have gotten that far.

“We played well in the second match and were relieved that we won the match however, we should have killed off the game in regulation time but we made some mistakes and we will learn from them going forward.”

The Cheetahs will take on Tunisia this Wednesday in their next match which is being played in a round Robbin format.

In tennis news, Benjamin Lock continued with his hunt for a medal after reaching the semi-finals courtesy of a 6-1 6-2 victory over his Egyptian counterpart.

Track and field competitions continue this Tuesday with Gerren Muwishi and Leeford Zuze competing in the 400m semi-final heats, while Wellington Varewi is challenging for the 10 000 metres gold medal.

Zimbabwe is looking to add to the five medals they have so far at the African Games.
