Suspected kidnappers in the dock

Story by Peter Chivhima, Courts Reporter

11 suspects who include bogus police officers have appeared at the Harare Magistrates’ Courts facing charges of kidnapping a Harare man before demanding US$120 000 from his relatives.

The suspects are Guo Zairen, Wang Gao, Primrose Miga, Charles Matondo, Tonderai Naison Kaja, Charles Notice, Christopher Chirombe, O’brian Miti, Simbarashe Kumba, Carlington Konselia and Oswel Tinotenda Tsikai.

It is the state’s case that on the 17th of this month, the suspects hatched a plan to kidnap the complainant and demand a ransom from his family.

It also emerged that five of the suspects and one Tendai Notice, who is still at large, went to a Chinese restaurant in Belgravia where they posed as Police officers before arresting a Chinese national Cheng.

The court also heard that the suspects handcuffed Cheng and took him to a certain house in Mandara, Harare where they later demanded 120 thousand United States dollars ransom to release him.

It is alleged that Cheng informed his sister that he had been arrested and was seeking 120 thousand United States dollars to pay as ransom.

Investigations led to the arrest of the suspects in Mandara, Harare where Cheng was found guarded by some of the suspects.

The suspects will be back in court this Monday for bail application.
