President Mnangagwa leaves for COP28

Story by Oleen Ndori

PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa has left Harare for Dubai, U.A.E to attend the 2023 United Nations Climate Change Summit.

The 28th meeting of the Conference of Parties (COP28) aims to deliberate various mechanisms in place to mitigate against the negative effects of climate change globally.

He was seen off at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport by Vice Presidents General (Rtd) Dr Constantino Chiwenga and Cde Kembo Mohadi, service chiefs and senior government officials.

The conference began today with calls by the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres that world leaders must “stop dawdling and start doing” on carbon emission cuts, as rapidly rising temperatures this year have put everyone on the frontline of disaster.

Scores of world leaders, senior ministers and officials from 198 countries will be in attendance, along with an estimate of 70,000 delegates, making it the biggest annual conference of the parties (Cop) yet held under the 1992 UN framework convention on climate change.
