Exam cheats set to lose as new Act empowers ZIMSEC to nullify results

Story by Memory Chamisa

THE Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (ZIMSEC) is taking a firm stance against examination paper leakages with those found on the wrong side of the law set to face the music.

Announcing the 2022 Ordinary Level examination results, ZIMSEC board chairperson, Professor Eddy Mwenje said those found cheating will have all their results nullified.

The new Act comes after various cases of examination paper leakages during the 2022 examination session.

‘‘As a result of the combined investigations reports from schools and the identification of culprits at Marking and Grade Review stages, a total of 4961 candidates had results nullified. This is out 278 760 who registered for the Ordinary level examination. The number represents 1.78 percent.

“Also, as way of doing away with leakages we have decided to nullify all the subjects for those who would have been caught.’’

Candidates who had pre-access to question papers at different examination centres have since had their results for the subjects in question nullified, while headmasters and individuals who circulated the exam papers on WhatsApp were arrested.

Professor Mwenje also announced the statistics for the November 2022 examinations.

‘‘A total of 278 760 candidates sat for the November 2022 examinations as compared to 249 914 candidates who sat for the same examinations in 2021.’’

There was a decrease in pass rate for female and male candidates with girls recording 24.98 this year while the pass rate for boys was 25.26 percent.

This was also the same case for special needs candidates where the pass rate decreased to 5.05 percent.
