ZIMBABWE is set to host the 15th edition of the World Military Golf Championship slated for Victoria Falls in June this year.
After a successful bid, which was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Zimbabwe Defense Forces will finally host the 15th edition of the World Military Golf Championship from the 16th to the 23rd of June.
Chairperson for WMG Championship Organising Committee, Air Vice Marshall Simon Nyowani said, “Zimbabwe now won the bid to host the 2024 World Military Golf Championship in Victoria Falls from the 16th to the 23rd of June 2024. We won ahead of Kenya and Ireland and the 16th edition will therefore be held in Kenya for 2025. In this tournament, we are expecting 20 delegates from 20 different countries. So far, we have 15 who have already put in their preliminary agreements, and we have the majority of delegates coming from Europe. This shows the friendship that we’re building now with our friends the world over.”
Zimbabwe is hoping to ride on home advantage at the International Military Sports Council tournament.
He added, “Zimbabwe participated in a golf tournament in Sri Lanka in 2017, our golf team in 2018 went to Germany and in 2019 just before the COVID outbreak we were in China. So just recently in October 2023 after the COVID-19 pandemic from the 1st to the 8th of October, our team also went to the United States of America and San Diego California, and this time we had the hosts.”
Zimbabwe is a member of the International Military Sports Council (CISM), whose aim is to promote sporting activities and physical education in the armed forces.
