TEAM Zimbabwe which participated at the just-ended Special Olympics World Games in Berlin, Germany, has returned home with eight medals.
It was joy and jubilation as Team Zimbabwe was received by family members at the Nations Sports Stadium.
The ten-member team has been in Berlin where they took part in the Special Olympics World Games and brought home eight medals, two gold, three silver and three bronze.
“We are very delighted to be back from a successful tour, we are happy taxpayers’ money was utilised well as the athletes were successful and it was just not about competing but the athletes got a chance to mix and learn different life skills from others as they share their experiences,” said Special Olympics Zimbabwe board member, Life Chemhere.
The inclusive nature of the games has been hailed.
“The games are so inclusive they taught the children to express themselves and we truly saw what we are always told that no one will be left behind as we were given an opportunity by our country to join the world and showcase our talents and other skills,” said Bocce coach, Masimba Nyarota.
Barbra Njovo who participated at the previous Games in Abu Dhabi, was awarded the Biden Coin Award after she caught the world’s attention with her project.
“I did a project on reusable sanitary pads as this is an issue that is not talked about but it affects everyone even special Olympic athletes.”
Special Olympics World Games are held every four years and are a preserve for athletes with intellectual disability.
