THE 2024 rugby season kicked off successfully with six of the seven matches scheduled for Old Georgians taking centre stage.

However, Zambezi Steelers got a walkover after Hatcliffe failed to turn up.

Record five-time champions Pitbulls started their chase for the title they lost last season on a high note after thumping Marondera Talons 71-13 in a highly anticipated match.

Pitbulls have won the U-20 title since its inception, save for last year when they lost it to Old Georgians.

Hosts Old Georgians also had a great start, walloping Zimbiru 50-07 in a one-sided match, while Harare Sports Club also welcomed FS Raiders to the Premiership with a baptism of fire after romping to a 57-10 victory.

Old Hararians will be hoping to keep the momentum this season as they had a good start before fizzling out at the end.

This Saturday, they got the better of Northern Chiefs 29-07 as all the big boys bagged victories.

Meanwhile, Harare Province held its elective Annual General Meeting this Saturday with Kudzai Zisengwe coming in as the new chairperson, taking over from Joe Kawonza who did not contest.

“We are looking forward to carrying the momentum, the groundwork has been laid already by the committee that was there before so it is up to us now to increase competition, get more fans involved, and grow the game as our mandate is to develop players,” said Zisengwe.

The league’s sponsors also pledged to continue supporting the sport.

“We are definitely in it for the long run, we want to make sure the game is played in a friendly and family environment that why you see we are taking care of referees, medical, and other necessities but we are happy with the numbers, today being the first day it’s very much encouraging,” said Paramount Garments Marketing Executive, Rumbi Dzimba.

The league will move to Harare Sports Club for round two matches.
