The King of football laid to rest

Story by Anashe Murombedzi

The world’s finest football legend Pelé, whose full name was Edson Arantes do Nascimento, has been buried at the Memorial Necropole Ecumenical, in Santos, this Tuesday with only his family present.

It has evidently been an emotional day for many especially in Brazil as thousands of people gathered in Santos waiting to see Pele’s coffin.

People stood on rooftops, leaning from balconies and packing the roads to get a glimpse of the Brazilian icon.

The blue, yellow and green jersey Number 10 coloured some parts of the town as fans wore in honour of the three-time World Cup winner.

The Brazilian public has been able to pay its final respects at the Vila Belmiro Stadium, outside Sao Paulo and the casket was carried through the streets of Santos and passed in front of the home of his 100-year-old mother, Celeste, on Monday.

The coffin carrying the three-time world champion then left Albert Einstein hospital and was placed in the centre circle of the field.

A private burial for Pele’s family followed as the legend was laid to rest this Tuesday at the Memorial Necropole Ecumenica, a vertical cemetery in Santos,

Pele died on Thursday last week after a long battle with colon cancer at the age of 82
