School authorities challenged to take sport and physical education seriously

SCHOOL authorities have been challenged to take sport and Physical Education (PE) seriously if the country is to excel at the international scene.

This came to the fore during the Sports Leaders Institute of Zimbabwe summer camp that is currently on in Nyanga.

Over 300 delegates that included school headmasters, physical education teachers and school development authorities gathered in Nyanga this Saturday for the Sport Leaders Institute Zimbabwe summer camp.

The gathering discussed issues to do with teaching of PE and sports in school, sports ethics, inclusivity, and management among other topical issues affecting the development of sport in Zimbabwe.

The need to treat the subject seriously was extensively interrogated.

Sport Leaders Institute Zimbabwe president,Russell Mhiribidi said, “Physical Education and Sport is now an examinable subject so it needs to be given all the attention it’s deserves, so the education of headmasters, teachers and SDCs is very important and we need to do sport well and we also need to understand that as teachers, our objective is to develop and teach not to be winners.”

Participants also highlighted some of the challenges that they are facing.

“As PE teachers we are not given enough time as to what is dedicated to matches and science, so there is need for a change of attitude,” said a participant.

A parent said, “As parents, we also need to support our children and also understand the demands from school, sport is now a subject and most of us don’t even understand that.”

“There is need for a proper synergy between the school, teachers and the parents, once that relationship is smooth then it’s beneficial for the child,” said another participant.

Physical Education was adopted into the school curriculum as an examinable subject in 2018.
