Highlanders aim to end season on a high

Story by Mthokozisi Dube

BULAWAYO giants Highlanders are hoping to end the season on high as they prepare for their last four matches starting with a tricky away tie to relegation-haunted Triangle United at Gibbo Stadium this Thursday.

A league is a marathon, and it is not how you start that matters, but how you finish.

The statement rings true to Highlanders who had a fairytale run going for 19 matches without tasting defeat, but the record is now a forgotten past as Highlanders are winless in seven matches.

Favourites to win the league midway through the season, Highlanders are now fighting for a top-four finish after a poor second half of the season.

Now targeting a respectable finish Highlanders find themselves in tricky assignments facing teams battling for survival.

Their next match is away to Triangle who are desperate to stay afloat after sacking coach Thulani Sibanda over a string of poor results.

Bosso’s biggest challenge this season has been the lack of goals.

All season they have scored a poultry 21 goals the third lowest in the league.

Despite the obvious struggles, Highlanders technical manager, Baltemer Brito is still convinced that his charges will turn the tide.

“We are doing everything well and the boys are showing signs of improvement. We hope we will carry over from where we left during the Caps United game,” said Brito.

Quizzed on his future at the Bulawayo giants, Brito who is also in charge of the national team revealed that no offer has been tabled so far.

“We may want to be here but it depends on whether the club has tabled anything to us but so far nothing has been tabled so that means we will have no option but to return to our country,” he said.

Highlanders are likely to parade young stars in the next four matches which all appear to be dead rubbers for a team once touted as title favourites.
