Chiwandire seeks rematch

Story by Anashe Murombedzi

DELTA Force Boxing Academy is set to appeal to the World Boxing Council for a rematch between Kudakwashe Chiwandire and Yamileth Mercado for the World Boxing Council (WBC) super bantamweight title whose bout was marred by controversy last weekend.

Kudakwashe Chiwandire and Yamileth Mercado met last weekend with the Mexican winning by a four-point difference after 10 rounds.

Chiwandire received her Mexican visa just three days before the scheduled bout, throwing her preparations and travel arrangements into jeopardy.

After efforts to postpone the match were fruitless, Chiwandire plunged into the bout under a cloud of controversy, hence her stable is seeking a rematch.

Delta force Boxing academy director Clyde Musonda said, “We have enough valid points to have a rematch, so we spoke to the WBC supervisor and the proposal was fruitless and earlier, we had requested for match postponement, but they insisted on proceeding. So, as a way forward, we need to return home and sit down with our boxing control board and partners to see how best we can make our request be considered since our challenges based on travel were genuine.”

Meanwhile, Chiwandire is expected back in the country this evening after connecting to Johannesburg, South Africa from Mexcio.
