SIX hundred and fifty primary school athletes have converged for the National Association of Primary School Heads (NAPH) Championships in Chinhoyi.
The national finals featured track and field events including hurdles, discus, shot put, long and high jump.
NAPH National president Mrs Cynthia Khumalo and secretary general Mr Kufakunesu Rupere expressed satisfaction with the level of competition.
Mrs Khumalo said, ‘‘The professional way the event has proceeded so far is very impressive. We have noted that track events have been more popular than the other codes.’’
Rupere noted, ‘‘It’s the first time in more than a decade that we have hosted this event. Competition is very rife and the youngsters are showing the will and zeal to win. The winners will go to the COSASSA games in a Southern African country to be named later.’’
The athletes are equally excited as they compete for honours with their peers.
Athlete Purity Jecheche said, ‘‘Am raring to win. What I like about sport is that it keeps me alert.”
Meanwhile, there was an interesting incident where one athlete lost a race after mistakenly assuming that she had crossed the line.
The little girl, Ropafadzo Mafios, was not even aware she had lost the race when ZBC News spoke to her.
The competition is in its final day this Thursday.
