Burkina Faso face Mauritania in Group D

Story by Anashe Murombedzi

AFRICA Cup of Nations defending champions Senegal made a big statement of intent after their emphatic three-nil win over Gambia in a Group C match this Monday.

The Lions of Teranga had a promising start in their title defense after a comfortable three-nil victory over Gambia.

Assisted by Sadio Mane, Pape Gueye opened the scoring just four minutes into the game, giving Alou Cisse’s charges an early lead in the first half.

Substitute Lamine Camara gave Senegal the cushion they needed when he made it two-nil, before scoring his second of the day to seal victory for defending Champions.

In another Group C encounter, Five-time champions Cameroon were held to a one-all draw by 10-man Guinea as the early stage of the Africa Cup of Nations continued to produce surprise results.

In Group D, Algeria could not hold on for victory after being held to a one-all draw by Angola in their Group D match.

Baghdad Bounedjah gave Algeria the lead after 18 minutes before Angola drew level after Mabululu scored from the penalty spot midway through the second half.

In today’s fixtures, Burkina Faso will face Mauritania in another Group D encounter at 4 pm.

Later on at 7 pm, Tunisia square-off with Namibia in Group E, while Mali will be up against South Africa at 10 pm in another Group E encounter.
