Bulawayo swimmers shine in Botswana

Story by Mthokozisi Dube

BULAWAYO-based armature swimmers shined at the just-ended Botswana national championships after scooping 52 medals.

15-year-old Nozintaba Moyo was among the best after landing the overall 15-year-old girls trophy, aiding Bulawayo Armature Swimming Association to nine gold medals.

With Bulawayo also scooping 27 silver and 16 bronze medals, Team Manager, Vusumuzi Sibanda was left convinced better days lie ahead for the sport.

Sibanda said, ‘‘We had a good journey and our athletes did exceptionally well. We had a total of 52 medals, but it was a performance by Nozi which cannot go unnoticed. As BASA, we have had challenges with girls in her age group who normally leave the sport, but we are hoping she will continue doing well in her category.’’

From the Botswana contingent, four athletes Thandeka Kusikwenyu, Lwandle Moyo, Rachael Ngwenya and Ian Gomeru are set to compete in a level two swimming contest in Pretoria set for this weekend, while Nozintaba has ample time to prepare for Durban’s level 3 tournament.
