Story by Mthokozisi Dube

THE Zimbabwe Volleyball Association has resolved to hold all competitions under the supervision of the Federation of International Volleyball as a way of guarding against competition manipulation and doping.

This came out during the Zimbabwe Volleyball Association’s Annual General meeting held in Nyanga at the weekend.

Eight out of 10 provinces that attended the Zimbabwe Volleyball Association’s annual general meeting took a firm stance to have all domestic competitions be played under the auspices of the Federation of International Volleyball in a move set to guard against competition manipulation and doping in the sport.

Zimbabwe Volleyball Association Secretary General, Enias Kondo confirmed they had a fruitful meeting which set the ball rolling for this year’s calendar.

Kondo said, ‘‘The president’s report was presented and adopted at the meeting and a lot of issues from the year 2022 were ratified. Also from the report were issues to do with competitions for the year 2023 where we had our Zimbabwe Open set for April 7-9 and also our inter-provincials to be played in August. We also took a stance to approve national team events, friendlies to begin with and the Zone VI that are to happen in the month of September. The Zimbabwe premier league volleyball also came under the spotlight and this year it was agreed that we are also going to play it under the auspices of the federation of international volleyball.

“We want all our athletes taking part to undergo education on competition manipulation and anti-doping. The beach volleyball tours that are happening locally and also in the zone came under the spotlight and were approved. The treasury also presented audited financial statements for the year 2021 which were outstanding and unaudited financials for the year 2022 and their approval was moved to the first board meeting for the year.’’

The Zimbabwe Volleyball Association will stage the Zimbabwe Open tournament from the 7th to the 9th of April, while the national team also got the nod to partake in friendly matches in preparation for the Zone VI championships.

Zimbabwe Volleyball Association has been involved in partnerships with the international federation, through its governing sports bodies; the Sports and Recreation Commission as well as the Zimbabwe Olympic Committee.
