Netball Gems placed in Group A of the 2023 Netball World Cup

Story by Lawrence Trusida, Sports Editor

ZIMBABWE has been drawn in Group A of the 2023 Netball World Cup to be held in South Africa from July 28 to August 6.

After leaving an indelible mark on their maiden appearance at the World Cup, the Gems begin their second campaign with a tough assignment against the previous edition’s silver medallists, Australia.

Zimbabwe has been placed in Group A of the 2023 World Cup and play the first match of the tournament on July 28.

The following day the Gems will have a date against Oceania side Fiji before concluding their group stage matches with a date against Tonga.

Australia are currently the world’s highest-ranked nation going into the World Cup, while Tonga are eighth with Fiji being the lowest-ranked team in the tournament at 17th.

The Felisitus Kwangwa-captained Gems are currently ranked 13th in the world and will be looking for a repeat of the 2019 performance where they made it past the group stages.

The Netball World Cup is held every four years and this year’s edition will mark the first time the tournament will be staged in Africa.

Zimbabwe qualified after finishing third at the Africa Netball World Cup Qualifiers held in Pretoria, South Africa last year.
