Local innovators manufacture speed-limit devices

Story by Tarirai Madhuyu

THE Education 5.0 model is bearing fruit, with some tertiary education graduates in Harare having embarked on the manufacturing of speed limit and monitoring devices in support of the government’s new law that requires public service vehicles to be fitted with speed limit devices.

Statutory Instrument (SI) 118 of June 2023 requires public service vehicles to be fitted with speed limit devices and innovators who have benefitted from the Education 5.0 model have capitalised on the new law to provide homegrown solutions.

Last week, the Standards Association of Zimbabwe (SAZ) gave more than 20 local companies the green light to manufacture speed limit devices and production has already begun.

The CEO of KudsinTech Ms Chido Manjokota said, “We are manufacturing these devices locally. We need to save lives on our roads. These gadgets go an extra mile in controlling drivers’ attitude when transporting passengers.”

The Education 5.0 model has been described as key to innovation and providing local solutions to local problems.

Educationist Dr Tendesai Mushamba said, “The model proved to be a permanent solution in solving problems currently faced by our country. This type of education syllabus remains relevant in a wider range of the economy’s sectors. Surprisingly, these kids are doing wonders not only after they leave school but anytime in their lives and their communities.”

Science Teacher Thelmmer Musekwa said,” The 5.1 model is greatly serving the lives of many in communities even when kids are still in school. In the health sector, when the country is currently facing the cholera pandemic, these kids can even provide their families with clean water.”

According to the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe, speeding accounts for 92% of road traffic accidents and 37% of fatalities on the country’s roads.
