INFORMATION Communication Technology experts have highlighted the need to close knowledge gaps to deal decisively with cyber-crime.
A cyber security public lecture held by the Ministry of Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services at Solusi University in Bulawayo this Monday drew attention to how knowledge gaps have left the citizenry vulnerable to cybercrime.
“The general public needs to be educated on the dangers of cyber-related issues because many a time, they are prone to these dangers,” said a student.
Another student added saying, “We as youths learnt that we have to be safe in our use of technology. We need to be wary of the things we post because they can be used against us.”
“Many people are victims of cyber-crimes because we do not buy technologically related items from authentic sources, we need to buy things from the right people because scams emanate from people who are not authentic,” said another.
Director of ICT Security in the Ministry of Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services, Mr Tapiwa Gumindoga stressed the need to protect children and young people from cyber-crime.
“We need to do more in ensuring the voices of children as users of technology are heard. Children are beneficiaries of our thrust on children’s online safety, as such it is imperative that they actively participate in making their engagement with technology safe, he said.
Cybercrime refers to the use of computers and other electronic gadgets to further criminal activities such as fraud, sharing and getting access to illegal information.
