CCC opaque structures contributed to Chamisa’s loss, says analysts

Story by Lisa Masuku

POLITICAL analysts are convinced the imposition of candidates and a flawed selection process contributed to the defeat of the Nelson Chamisa-led opposition in the General Elections held last week.
Political commentators have laid bare how Advocate Nelson Chamisa’s opaque party structures resulted in his loss to a well-oiled ZANU PF in the August 23 plebiscite.

“CCC did not have structures, even in terms of candidate selection, the candidate selection was opaque, it was not transparent that’s why party candidates ended up competing with each other,” said Makhosini Hlongwane, an analyst.

Others said the party lost in its traditional strongholds because of attempting to turn politics into a family affair.

“We saw candidates related to certain individuals within the hierarchy of CCC being fielded. This contributed to his loss in the 2023 elections,” said Methuseli Moyo, an analyst.

The CCC leader stands accused of imposing his young brother Starman in the Mbare constituency where he was trounced by the ZANU PF candidate and his young sister Fungai who lost in Chiredzi North Constituency.
