Story by Mercy Bofu

THE government says the establishment of the Zimbabwe Zhongxing Smelting Company in Mashava is a major boost in the production of ferrochrome.

Following a ban on the exportation of raw chrome, several chrome smelters have been established in the country among them Zimbabwe Zhongxin Smelting Company in Mashava aimed at promoting local value addition and beneficiation of the mineral.

This week, the Deputy Minister of Mines and Mining Development, Honorable Polite Kambamura and his delegation toured the plant, which is expected to start operating in January.

He said, “This is one of the many chrome smelters established following the ban on the exportation of raw chrome and it has the capacity of producing 4 500 tonnes of ferchrome per month, at a feed of 9 000 raw chrome ores. Currently, 36 local Zimbabweans are employed at this operation. In January, the plant will start running 300 local Zimbabweans will be employed. This beneficiation will see the ferrochrome from this plant being fed into the main plant at Manhize.”
