FOLLOWING a surge in corruption cases costing the nation billions of dollars, the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission says it will be intensifying the fight against the scourge with more focus placed on high-profile cases.
This was revealed by ZACC Chairperson, Commissioner Loice Matanda Moyo in an exclusive interview with the ZBC News crew this Tuesday.
Commissioner Matanda Moyo said, “The fight will be extended to the private sector, civil society organizations, and non-governmental sector while the mining sector will be under intensified scrutiny from both investigations for prosecution and asset recovery.”
The commission is also targeting to recover and forfeit assets worth US$1 billion held outside the country.
“In 2023, ZACC will continue to expose, combat and eradicate corruption driven by expenditures in the public sector. A target of 700 completed dockets has been set for 2023. In addition in 2023, the commission will expose, combat, and prevent corruption that is driven by revenue leakages involving the private sector and part of the public sector recovering assets worth US$1 billion in the process.
“The target has been revised to US$1 billion which means the commission targets to recover assets stashed outside the country. Whilst this target might seem unrealistically high and unachievable, it will not be ZACC’s AFRU that will be seized with matter only, but the investigations department and compliance and systems review unit, too,” she said.
In 2020, the government launched the National Anti-Corruption Strategy as a road map towards fighting corruption in the country in line with vision 2030.
