Women in leadership and decision-making strategy launched

Story by John Nhandara

THE Government has launched the women in leadership and decision-making strategy intending to promote women’s participation in politics, and the public and private sectors.

The strategy was launched by Women Affairs, Community Small and Medium Enterprises Minister Honourable Sithembiso Nyoni in Harare this Friday, where she underscored the relevance of the strategy in promoting women’s participation in decision-making and evaluation processes within various institutions.

“Gender imbalance in leadership positions remains an acknowledged problem. Women continue to fall behind their male colleagues in progressing towards leadership in all sectors, public private and political. Gender equality creates the conditions to boost economic development and contributes to economic growth,” said the minister.

Also present at the launch were the visiting Malawi Parliamentary Caucus members who concurred that the strategy is timely in empowering women to be champions in their communities and institutions.

“The launch demonstrates how the Zimbabwe government values the women of Zimbabwe and it marks a vibrant campaign towards mobilising women into decision-making positions and also the opportunity to realise their full potential,” said Honourable Roseby Gadma the chairperson of the Malawi Parliamentary Caucus.

Zimbabwe has ratified several regional and international instruments that promote gender equality and women empowerment.
