Skills retention allowances to plug skills flight

Story by Fungai Jachi

THE move by the government to pay a special allowance to its employees with critical and scarce skills has been described as a positive development that will boost confidence in the civil service while limiting brain drain.

Brain drain has been a major challenge in the country as such,
the government has taken a deliberate stance to give a special allowance to its skilled workers.

This was revealed in the recent statement by the Secretary of the Public Service Commission Dr Tsitsi Choruma.

Analysts say the move by the government will restore confidence in the civil service and ensure that the nation does not lose drivers of the country’s industrial revolution.

“This move will help to curb the challenge of brain drain and through this skilled workers will stay in the country and help our industries grow,” said Mr John Ndandi an economic analyst.

“This will restore confidence in the public service as we will retain skills that are critical for the country’s industrialisation agenda. I am sure we will see a difference as even youngsters will be attracted to work in government,” said Mr Takudzwa Gambiza a political analyst.

The retention allowances under the Skills Attraction Retention and Development Fund will be paid to Engineers, Information Communication Technology Specialists, Mining Surveyors, Forensic Scientists and legal drafters.

The payments will start this month.
