Mkoba Teacher’s College temporarily closed

Story by Tafara Chikumira

GWERU-based Mkoba Teacher’s College has been temporarily closed after a diarrhoeal outbreak at the institution.

The closure of the institution will affect end-of-term examinations which have been halted for two weeks.

In a statement, Midlands Provincial Medical Director, Dr Mary Muchekeza said although there are no positive cholera cases reported at the institution, the decision was made after more than 500 diarrhoeal cases were detected at the teacher training college.

Investigations have established that water at the institution is not fit for human consumption after samples discovered a high faecal count.

An environmental assessment of the college’s kitchen has also proved that the facility is unhygienic with evidence pointing to poor food storage techniques while there are no medically examined food handlers.

The temporary closure of the institution is meant to give authorities time to rectify the problematic areas before business resumes.
