Massive housing projects set to kick off in Dzivarasekwa this year

Story by Theophilus Chuma

THE Government is working on a massive housing project of at least 100 blocks of flats in Dzivarasekwa, Harare to be implemented through a Public Private Partnership (PPP) this year.

The latest venture to construct 100 blocks of flats in Dzivarasekwa will add to the impressive strides achieved so far in the housing delivery sector, with official figures from the National Development Strategy review for January 2021 to June 2023, showing that over 150 000 flats and close to 200 000 houses have been constructed.

The housing project has courted interest from both domestic and foreign players.

Minister of National Housing and Social Amenities Honourable Daniel Garwe said, “We have invited the private sector on a Finance, Engineering, Construct and Deliver basis, so we have invited the private sector in Zimbabwe and also foreign players. We have received so many proposals from developers both domestic and foreign who wish to partner government on this project.”

Critical amenities for the project have been completed, setting the tone for actual implementation.

“We have done the roads, the water and the sewer system. Now in 2024, we will build the flats. All this land you see here has been set aside for that project. We are looking at phase 1 of about 20 blocks of flats, but the whole area I think we are going to do about 100 blocks of flats,” he added.

Effectively, the venture dovetails with the national target to build one million housing units by 2025.
