Mashonaland East declares war on drug lords

Story by Jerold Sasa

MASHONALAND East has declared war on drug peddlers as the province steps up efforts to curb the menace of drug and substance abuse.

The Province has not been spared by the menace of drug and substance abuse hence the move to adopt a multi-sectoral approach in dealing with the vice.

The province held an awareness campaign in Marondera, which started with a march from the central business district to Rudhaka Stadium.

“We can no longer fold our hands and watch as our youths are being destroyed by this scourge which is caused mainly by suppliers who need to be dealt with,” said Mashonaland East Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Senator Aplonia Munzverengwi.

The Marondera municipality has also come on board to fight the scourge after pledging to rehabilitate recreational facilities in the town.

“We have committed ourselves as Marondera town to rehabilitate all facilities which have not been used for some time now,” said Marondera mayor, Councilor Isaac Nyakarombo.

A total of 956 people were arrested in connection with drug abuse between September and October in Mashonaland East province compared to 525 during the same period last year.
