Story by Lawrence Trusida, Sports Editor

MULTI-AWARD-WINNING martial arts star, Wilfred Mashaya is hoping to organise Kobudo tournaments in Zimbabwe this year to spread the sport nationwide.

After a stellar year on the international circuit, martial artist Wilfred Mashaya is keen to spread the sport nationwide by organising local tournaments.

Kobudo is a form of Japanese martial arts focused on weapons training and Mashaya is the first African to be a World champion in the format.

Mashaya who returned home on New Year’s Eve with a gold medal in hand after winning the International Karate BG tournament in Bangladesh looks ahead to a more fruitful year.

“The year 2023 was a wonderful year, and we are hoping for more this year but the plan is to make sure we spread the game as much as possible so I want to organize local Kobudo tournaments for talent identification and team selection so that we have the best martial artists representing Zimbabwe.”

The Zimbabwe Ninja Academy, which was formed by Master Mashaya has been using martial arts to fight societal challenges like drug and substance abuse as well as training women in self-defence techniques.
