Govt actions Operation Chenesa Harare

Story by Wellington Makonese

THE Government has rolled out the waste collection programme code-named “Operation Chenesa Harare” in the face of the cholera outbreak, with over 200 tonnes of waste collected on the first day.

Piles of waste have become the trademark for most centres around Harare, with the situation denigrating the appeal and health standards of the once sunshine city.

Efforts on the part of residents to maintain some semblance of order have gone to nought, with the situation also denting business in the Central Business District.

With support from private players, the government has since stepped in through Operation Chenesa Harare, with over 200 tonnes of waste having been collected in areas such as Mbare, and Glen Norah.

“We are here to assess the effectiveness of the CPU, over 200 tonnes of waste gas have been removed, we have mobilized, and the government will continue to work with all stakeholders who have assisted with the equipment to bring success to the programme,” said Minister of Local Government and Public Works, Honourable Winston Chitando.

The City of Harare believes government intervention will rescue the situation and allow the local authority to re-strategise waste management.

“We are very happy with the thrust by the Ministry with the support we getting, as a council we hope this proceeds going forward and when we craft a framework we will not have such kind of challenges,” said Harare Mayor, Councilor Jacob Mafume.

The operation was launched on Saturday in response to the rising cholera cases that have since exceeded 15 000.
