THE Environmental Management Authority (EMA) has embarked on a refuse collection blitz as part of implementing the Government’s waste management programme.
This comes after a state of disaster declaration on solid waste management in Harare early this week.
EMA has started implementing waste management programmes which include refuse collection from illegal dumpsites.
The authority was this Saturday in Hatcliffe suburb, a residential area that has also seen mushrooming of illegal dumpsites.
“The declaration gives EMA an oversight role of coordinating the activities to ensure the emergency solid waste management remedial works are all implemented. The overarching activity among the remedial works is now ongoing. We now want to establish sustainable mechanisms of ensuring we have clean cities,” said EMA Spokesperson, Ms Amkela Sidange.
Meanwhile, the Ghanaian community in Zimbabwe led by the country’s Ambassador, His Excellency Alexander Grant Ntrakwa held a clean-up campaign along Kwame Nkrumah Avenue in Harare’s central business district as part of embracing the government’s clarion call for a cleaner environment and as part of celebrating the life of Ghana’s first president Kwame Nkrumah.
“The 4th of August is a day we remember the first President of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah, so as part of complementing the government’s efforts for a clean environment, we decided to hold our commemorations by having this clean-up of Kwame Nkrumah Avenue,” said the Ambassador.
Residents are also being urged to play a leading part in environmental stewardship programmes such as cleaning the environment.
