THE church has been implored to play a leading role in promoting peace ahead of the country’s general elections which will be held on the 23rd of August.
The country was ushered into the election season after President Emmerson Mnangagwa proclaimed the date for the general elections.
With two months left before the nation goes to the polls, key stakeholders agree on the need to promote peace.
That was the rallying call at St John Apostolic Church’s annual convention which was attended by ZANU PF Provincial Chairperson Cde Jabulani Sibanda in Bulawayo this Sunday.
“The church has been working with the nation from the time of colonisation and it has helped in defending what is right. As we go to the polls, the church has to play a critical role in leading its members into what is right and defending the principles of our nation.
“There is a need for people to understand the history of Zimbabwe and where we are aiming to go as a nation. People have to be enlightened about the development in the country and the church has to play that role to ensure we build the nation and by voting we are making sure that development is consistent,” he said.
The church is fully aware of its role during the election period.
“As the church, we have to work towards making sure that there is peace before, during and after elections and we should preach the message of peace and work on engaging people on desisting from tribal conflicts,” said a representative of the Saint John Apostolic Church of the Whole World, Mr Evans Mugari.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa has reiterated the important role of the church in nation-building as the nation journeys towards an upper-middle-income society by 2030.
