Chirumhanzu water woes set to end

Story by Courage Bushe

CHIRUMHANZU Rural District Council has acquired a drilling rig through devolution funds as the local authority steps up efforts to complement the national borehole sinking programme to ensure the availability of water.

Despite favourable rainfall patterns, Chirumhanzu district faces challenges in accessing clean water due to scarcity of boreholes and potable water.

The challenges are, however, set to be a thing of the past after the government intervened with at least 20 000 people expected to benefit from the borehole drilling rig equipment commissioned at Gonamombe Village in Chirumhanzu South this Wednesday.

“We are happy to be commissioning the drill rig, and we look forward to ending water challenges in our district,” said a Chirumhanzu resident.

Another said, “We are happy, especially since the rig will be used to drill boreholes from where we will get water from.”

Midlands Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Honourable Owen Ncube implored local authorities to use devolution funds in a productive manner that benefits communities.

“I urge other local authorities to emulate and use devolution funds efficiently for the betterment of our communities by implementing projects that have a positive impact. Now that Chirumhanzu RDC has a drilling rig, we expect to see water and sanitation coverage improving.”

Under the Presidential Borehole Scheme, the government is targeting to sink 35 000 boreholes across all villages countrywide.
