Angel of death strikes Mvuma

Story by Memory Chamisa

EASTER Holidays have witnessed more than 17 deaths, with 16 of them being recorded in a space of four days in Mvuma.

As Zimbabweans joined the rest of the world in celebrating Easter Holidays, for some it was not the same, as the celebrations turned into funerals.

Although the holidays are synonymous with accidents across the country, of concern this year is the town of Mvuma.

In a space of three days, Mvuma alone has recorded 16 deaths with several being injured and admitted in hospitals.

Giving an update to the ZBC News this Monday, Zimbabwe Republic Police Spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi reiterated the need for drivers to adhere to road regulations to avoid accidents.

“Mvuma is engulfed in a dark cloud as it has recorded 16 deaths in three days. On Friday 10 people were killed on the spot. Along the Mutare – Harare highway, a single death was recorded. All these accidents were due to negligence and flaunting of road rules by drivers,” he said.

Passengers have been also been warned to desist from encouraging drivers to speed as it puts their lives in danger.

“Passengers must stop encouraging drivers to speed on roads. We have heard that passengers are the ones who instigate drivers and as a result they end up losing their lives and don’t get where they will be rushing to,” he added.

The major causes of road accidents have been observed to be speeding, negligence, misjudgment, overtaking errors and failure to observe road regulations.
