The first phase of the Dinson Iron and Steel plant in Manhize is nearing completion, with project director Mr Wilfred Motsi revealing that 95%of the work is now complete.

Amongst the components now fully completed is the blast furnace and according to Mr Motsi, production of pig iron is scheduled to start next month.

The Dinson Iron and Steel project is expected to put Zimbabwe on the map upon completion, making it one of the largest iron and steel producers on the African continent.

The country is currently importing steel worth close to US$1 billion and the coming on board of Manhize will not only ensure import substitution, but make Zimbabwe a major exporter of iron and steel.

Mr Motsi revealed that the first phase of the project will see production of 600 000 metric tonnes of carbon steel with the second phase projected to churn out 1.5 million metric tonnes of the product.

Currently 1 500 locals are employed at Manhize with the number expected to double once phase one of production resumes.

Steel is a key component on the construction industry hence its high demand globally.
