South Africa revokes national state of disaster to address power crisis

Story by ZBC Reporter

The South African government has revoked a national state of disaster declared in February to address the electricity crisis in that country.

The state of disaster gave the government power to use emergency procurement procedures with fewer bureaucratic delays in a bid to end severe power cuts.

There was however concern that the move would open the door for further corruption at state-owned power company, Eskom after it was caught up in scandals and is more than US$20 billion in debt.

The South African government now says it can deal with the crisis through existing legislation.

South Africa’s Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana has also reversed a decision to exempt Eskom from declaring all of its expenditures with power cuts having eased in recent weeks.
