AT least 17 people have died, and several others injured after two trains collided in Eastern Bangladesh.

According to the Chief of the local fire service Mohammad Masud, about 50 people were injured, with fears the death toll could rise as rescue operations continue.

Officials said a freight train smashed into the rear coaches of a passenger train in Bhairab, 80 kilometres North-East of Dhaka Monday afternoon.

Bangladesh authorities are investigating the cause of the accident.
