Poor service delivery haunts Chitungwiza, 179 cases of Cholera recorded in five days

Story by Abigirl Tembo, Health Editor

ALMOST 200 suspected Cholera cases have been recorded in Chitungwiza alone during the past five days, amid fears of a health disaster in Harare’s dormitory town, which is facing acute water shortages.

The situation is even worse as raw sewer flows in homes and on the Chitungwiza streets, with residents blaming the local authority for sleeping on duty.

“Every day we live in fear of getting sick, especially now that there is Cholera. We have no running water and our toilets are blocked. We have been reporting to the local authority, but nothing is being done to rectify the situation,” said a resident.

“This sewer problem has become an everyday problem. This is now our reality, we are now used to the horrible smell,” said another resident.

“The council is neglecting us. Maybe it’s because they don’t stay here so they just don’t care about our health and well-being or else they would have dealt with this a long time ago,” said a Chitungwiza resident.

Chitungwiza recorded its first case of Cholera last week on Friday.
