New water system for Chipinge

Story by Tamuka Charakupa

THE Chipinge Town Council is set to test it’s new water supply system this month as it steps up efforts to solve erratic supplies of the precious liquid in the town.

The newly installed water system will see an increase in supply from five mega litres to 15 mega litres.

“Our town is expanding, as such, water demand is also increasing. We are delighted to note the efforts being put in by the council to address the issue. As the business community, we need adequate water for our operations to be smooth,” said a Chipinge business owner.

“Currently we only receive tap water in the morning. We therefore welcome the water upgrade being done,” said a resident.

Another Chipinge resident said “This is a good development for the town. The more we increase the water supply to our reserve tanks, the more we get enough water daily. This will go a long way in addressing water-related diseases like Cholera.”

Acting Chipinge Town Clerk, Engineer Dereck Popi revealed that the equipment is now in place with the test run set for this month.

“We are upgrading our water system from 5 mega litres to 15 megalitres. In other words, we have now installed three pumps with a capacity of 280 cubic meters per hour and are ready for testing anytime this month. We have completed the carriage line from Bangazani Dam to our storage reserves so this development will address the water challenges in the town,” said engineer Popi.

The water reticulation project is being funded by the African Development Bank and being implemented through the United Nations Office for Project Services and the Chipinge Town Council.
