GOVERNMENT has commissioned Chemusonde Bridge which connects the Gokwe Centre to Gwehava and Choto business centres in Midlands province.
The bridge, which was funded through the Public Sector Investment Programme under the Rural Infrastructure Development Agency (RIDA), is expected to improve business within Gokwe South District.
Gokwe Centre Legislator Honourable Davison Masvisvi said, “The construction of this road has brought huge relief in the constituency. The place had become a death trap to people who wanted to cross the river, especially during the rainy season.”
“I am happy to have been part of the people who constructed this key infrastructure. We got jobs here as locals and managed to acquire some key equipment and buy some goods for my children,” said one of the residents.
Another added, “It was increasingly becoming difficult to access key provisions such as seed as huge trucks could not cross the bridge. We also used to face difficulties as some vehicles were shunning this road, especially during the rainy season.”
Government says the provision of key infrastructure will continue across the country as the Second Republic is making strides towards the attainment of an upper-middle-income society by 2030.
Midlands Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Honourable Owen Ncube said, “I urge Gokwe South District Council to ensure maximum utilisation of equipment procured through Devolution Funds and other equipment at their disposal to improve rural road infrastructure, water, and sanitation among other services. Road’s accessibility to schools, clinics, business centres and traditional leaders’ homestead must be spruced up appropriately.”
The completion of the Chemusonde Bridge, which collapsed in 2016, adds to the growing list of key infrastructure that is being constructed across the country as the Second Republic continues with its development agenda.
