THE Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) has organised a 10-day voter registration campaign starting this Sunday which will also be a chance for voters who wish to change polling stations.

The voter registration blitz is the last one before the proclamation of the election date and offers an opportunity for those eligible to register to vote in the forthcoming general elections.

Briefing journalists in Harare this Tuesday, Zimbabwe Electoral Commission Deputy Chairperson Ambassador Rodney Kiwa said the voter registration blitz will also enable those who wish to change their polling stations to do so.

“Yes, we are going to be undertaking a blitz to make sure that every citizen who is qualified to be a voter, who is 18 years and above, should be registered. We have set 12-21 March as the blitz programmes. We will be starting from 7 am to 5 pm every day of the 10 days which will be undertaking the blitz. Obviously, we expect leaders at all levels be they traditional, or political to help us mobilise the people to ensure many voters are registered. This is also an opportunity for voters who may wish to transfer their polling areas,” he said.

Ambassador Kiwa said the commission will set up a multi-party liaison committee for conflict resolution.

“Registration is a continuous process, we will only stop two days after the proclamation after which we will then be in a position to clean up our voters register and then be able to make it available, but that will be only after the proclamation.

“We need to activate the multi-party liaison committee. The law requires us to put it into practice, so in a few days’ time, we should be in a position to set up the multi-party liaison committee. These are the responsibilities clearly outlined in our electoral act. Mainly, the focus is on conflict resolution,” he added.

Zimbabwe is heading for general elections this year and the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission is seized with mobilising resources and materials for the plebiscite.
