CHEVRONS veteran all-rounder Sean Williams has been nominated for the International Cricket Council (ICC) player of the month for June following his outstanding form in the ICC World Cup Qualifiers.

Williams has been in a different class of his own despite Zimbabwe losing out on a ticket to the World Cup slated for India from October to November this year.

In seven innings, Williams scored 600 runs from 437 balls, inclusive of three centuries and two half centuries, scoring 67 fours and 13 sixes in the process.

Williams has been in imperious form, boasting of a strike rate of 139.21, the best strike rate in the tournament with a high score of 174 runs.

Willow, as Williams is known in cricket circles, is followed by West Indies’ batsmen Shai Hope (339 runs) and Nicolas Pooran (336 runs), making him the outstanding batsman in the tournament.

Arguably Zimbabwe’s best performer during the qualifiers, Willow also played a crucial role with the ball in the loss to Scotland, grabbing three wickets for 41 runs in his 10 overs spell.

During the course of the month, Williams also joined the elite class of Virat Kohli and Babar Azam after scoring 532 runs in Zimbabwe’s first five matches at the World Cup Qualifier 2023, to become the third-highest run-scorer across five consecutive ODI innings.

After joining Sikandar Raza to become the fourth Zimbabwean to score two consecutive centuries for the Chevrons, the veteran all-rounder will be looking forward to joining Raza again in winning the ICC monthly accolade, after Raza won it in August 2022.

Wanindu Hasaranga who has been in imperious form for Sri Lanka claiming 20 wickets for 249 runs in six innings, alongside Australia’s Travis Head are the other cricketers vying for the top gong together with Williams.
