Water preservation under spotlight

PRESERVATION of water in the face of climate change came under the spotlight at the joint Eco-Schools Water Day and World Meteorological Day celebrations in Harare this Friday
In marking the Eco-Schools Water Day and World Meteorological Day at Mukuvisi Woodlands, the Deputy Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Honourable Angeline Gata said it is critical to arm the younger generation with strategies that sustain water and the environment at large.
This came after an assessment of the water purification system at Mukuvisi Woodlands.
“We are grateful to the government of Zimbabwe for ensuring we have technologies that map. We need to create awareness on climate change issues, how nature works and how to make way past the changes. If we look after nature, nature will take care of us. The importance of water cannot be overemphasised. The bulk of electricity comes through water so it is important to preserve it. The advent of biofuel requires more water. The President is concerned and looks forward to the preservation of the environment for future generations and the future is the youth who should be involved,” she said.
The Meteorological Services Department stressed the need for a comprehensive climate management system.
“We are striving for a comprehension climate management system by different players. We strive for climate action which should be now and we thrusting on the young generation that’s why you see many school children,” said the Head Meteorologist at the Meteorological Service Department, Mr James Ngoma.
The eco-schools initiative also looks into Sustainable Development Goal Number 6 on provision of safe water and sanitation, with schools also looking into innovative ways of water purification and preservation methods.
