US$14 million required for Byo water challenge

US$14 million is required to address Bulawayo’s water challenges on a short to medium-term basis.
Short- and medium-term solutions, which include securing and protecting Nyamandlovu aquifer as well as diverting Mtshabezi pipeline have been highlighted as key in solving Bulawayo’s water crisis.
Briefing the media in Bulawayo after a closed-door meeting with Mayor, Councillor David Coltart, the Minister of Local Government and Public Works, Honourable Winston Chitando said government will facilitate investment in short-term solutions to address the city’s water crisis.
“We discussed a three-stage solution in addressing Bulawayo’s water challenges. Firstly short term, secondly medium term and thirdly long term. The second issue we discussed is that the government to facilitate investment in short-term solutions of addressing the water challenges. At least US$14 is required,” he said.
Bulawayo Mayor, Councillor David Coltart welcomed the government’s move to rescue Bulawayo from the water crisis.
“It is gratifying to note that the government understands the city’s water crisis and is committed to addressing it,” he said.
The construction of the Glass Block Dam in Matabeleland South province is another medium-term solution, while the government works on the Gwayi-Shangani Lake.
