THE need for stakeholders to take actively participate in curbing road carnage emerged when the United Nations Secretary-General Special Envoy on Road Safety, Mr Jean Todt paid a courtesy call on President Emmerson Mnangagwa at State House this Wednesday.

Emerging from a closed-door meeting, Mr Todt said reducing road carnage must be one of the government’s top priorities.

“We spoke about the road safety review report which was requested by the Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Development to explain the situation around the world and the African Continent. We also asked the President to take it as a government priority to decrease the number of victims, we know that unfortunately there is carnage on the road, many people get injured,” he said.

The involvement of the private sector and international organisations in the reduction of victims of road carnage has also been cited as critical.

“It is not only the role of the government, but everyone considering everyone is a road user. We need a contribution of global organizations, the private sector, and media to change attitudes and achieve SDG to halve the number of victims on the roads,” said Mr Todt.

Meanwhile, the visiting Special Envoy also met officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage.

Zimbabwe has been strengthening its road safety strategies and policies to achieve aspirations of the Decade of Action for Road Safety.
